Retrofit Design

Other than this website, there is no single comprehensive source of information on seismic retrofit. The following is a list of the sources from which this website's information is compiled.

  • The Uniform Code of Building Conservation, Appendix Chapter 6 entitled "Prescriptive Provisions for Seismic Strengthening of Cripple Walls and Sill Plate Anchorage of Light, Wood-framed, Residential Buildings."

  • The Los Angeles Building Code, Chapter 92 entitled "Voluntary Earthquake Hazard Reduction in Existing Woodframe Residential Buildings."

  • The City of Santa Monica Retrofit Building Code.

  • The FEMA Retrofit Training Manual.

  • Hundreds of pages of documentation written by the Structural Engineers of Southern California Cripple Wall Failure Research Committee.

  • Documents published by the Los Angeles Dept. of Building and Safety under the "Anchor L.A." program.

  • Technical bulletins and test reports published by the American Plywood Association.

  • The Council of American Building Official's National Evaluation Reports that evaluate the ability of fasteners to resist earthquake forces.

  • Test reports on all commerically available hardware designed for retrofit applications published by the International Conference of Building Officials (I.C.B.O.)

  • Interviews with Mr. Jim Russell, chairman of the Cripple Wall Failure Research Committee and principle author of the Retrofit Section of the Uniform Code of Building Conservation.|

  • Interviews with Mr. Tim McCormick, Building Official for the City of Santa Monica, former head of the "Anchor L.A." program and structural engineer in charge of training all of L.A.'s engineers and building inspectors in the principles of seismic retrofit. He is also the author of much of the FEMA retrofit training manual.

  • Many thousands of hours spent crawling around under houses and figuring out the best ways to retrofit them.
