A faultlline rupture.A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE COULD STRIKE THE   BAY AREA AT ANY TIME

"Scientists monitoring the dangerous web of seismic faults beneath the densely populated San Francisco Bay region now calculate that there is a 70% chance that a major earthquake with magnitude 6.7 or greater will strike somewhere in the area before 2030 . . . an 80 percent chance that one or more damaging quakes with magnitudes of 6 to 6.7 will hit the region before 2030."

San Francisco Chronicle, Oct. 15, 1999
