This Video explores how ineffective retrofit techniques are often used and why.  Without a code to follow many contractors and engineers simply dream up something they hope will work. Here we describe very common but ineffective retrofit methods that your contractor or engineer may recommend.

This is not to say that some very inventive approach to retrofitting a building will not work if it is based on scientific retrofit engineering principles.   Using the information on this website, make sure your retrofit contractor or engineer can explain why he is convinced his unique retrofit method will work.  This video goes through some of the unusual and ineffective retrofit measures we have seen.
